Following calls by Clwyd West AM Darren Millar, Transport for Wales have announced that they will be offering special promotions to over 50s travelling on their trains.
Earlier this year Darren wrote to Transport for Wales (TFW) to ask whether they would be offering similar discounts to those provided by Arriva Trains Wales, whose ‘Club 55’ scheme provided low cost, off-peak travel offers for customers aged 55 or over, enabling passengers to travel anywhere on the Arriva Trains Wales network for just £27.
He also raised the matter in the Welsh Parliament.
He was therefore pleased to learn this week that Transport for Wales have introduced a very similar promotion to ‘Club 55’.
‘Club 50’ offers a fixed price return ticket at £29 between any two stations on the TFW network and will run until 24 November 2019.
“When I first approached Transport for Wales about this back in February they emphasised that ‘Club 55’ was an Arriva specific scheme and they made no mention of introducing a similar scheme, I therefore very much welcome their change of heart on this. This promotion will be of great benefit to many of my constituents, particularly those wishing to visit Cardiff and other locations in South Wales, which can be very costly from North Wales.
“It is essential we ensure that rail travel is accessible and affordable to all. Arriva’s ‘Club 55’ scheme was very popular, enabling older passengers to travel at a very discounted price, and I am sure there will be similar demand for this discount scheme. I would like to thank Transport for Wales for listening to what passengers want and would encourage all rail travelers aged 50 and over to take advantage of the scheme.”
