Councils spend millions on compensation

Local authorities in Wales have spent over £6.5 million pounds on compensation since 2005.

Figures obtained by Shadow Minister for Local Government, Darren Millar AM, show that local authorities in Wales have paid out £6, 685,025 for falls and accidents on council maintained footpaths and roads.

Commenting on the figures, Mr Millar said:

“It is important that local authorities compensate people where they have been proven to be negligible.

“However, in this tough economic climate where local authorities are struggling with tight financial settlements, it is concerning that so much money is being paid out in compensation.

“With the reduction in funds awarded through Transport Grant schemes for 2010-11, local authorities will inevitably have a reduced capacity to deal with repairs and improvements.

“Welsh Conservative-led councils are already working to reprioritise spending in light of these cuts and it is vitally important that other local authorities follow their lead.”
